Minot-based health system adds enterprise AI governance infrastructure as it expands artificial intelligence across clinical and operational environments
MINOT, N.D. and JOHNS CREEK, Ga., October 27, 2026 — Trinity Health, the largest healthcare provider in northwest and central North Dakota, has selected Vitea, an AI governance platform built for healthcare, to establish enterprise-wide visibility, policy enforcement, and accountability for the AI tools operating across its hospitals, clinics, and care sites.
Trinity Health has been expanding its use of AI across clinical and operational environments as part of a broader modernization of its technology infrastructure. As adoption has increased, the health system has sought governance capabilities that can keep pace, ensuring every AI application remains visible, operates within defined policies, and can be evaluated using evidence meaningful to clinicians, administrators, regulators, and patients.
“Every AI opportunity here goes through a governance council, and anything in a regulatory gray area doesn’t move forward. But a council can govern only what reaches it,” said John McDaniel, Chief Information Officer at Trinity Health. “As our AI footprint grows, we need to see every AI tool in use and enforce our AI policies on each one automatically, stopping what crosses the line before it reaches a patient or a record. Vitea gives us both the visibility and the control."
Vitea identifies sanctioned, embedded, and previously unknown AI applications across the environment. Once visible, those applications are governed through more than 100 healthcare-specific policies that block or redact potentially harmful or out-of-policy prompts and responses in real time. Continuous AI monitoring extends that oversight post-deployment, tracking model behavior, performance, and risk as AI systems evolve.
“One-time approval doesn't work with AI. Models get retrained, vendors push updates, and performance drifts silently. Vitea monitors for that, so we catch those changes before they become incidents,” said Ryan McDaniel, Chief Information Security Officer and Director of Infrastructure and AI at Trinity Health.
Health systems are increasingly treating AI governance as core infrastructure rather than a compliance function layered on afterward — a shift driven by the recognition that oversight is what allows adoption to scale. Trinity Health joins a growing roster of health systems that have selected Vitea to serve as that foundation.
"The next decade of healthcare will be defined not by how quickly health systems adopt AI, but by how well they govern it," said Shantanu Nigam, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Vitea. "Trinity Health is showing what that future looks like. They decided early that trust would be built into the foundation of their AI strategy, not bolted on later. That kind of leadership shows that regional and rural health systems can lead on AI, not follow, and we're proud to help them do it."
